Optimising it is another story entirely. Many organisations settle for pipelines that only half work. The result? Slowdowns, exploding costs and unreliable insights.

Here are 5 concrete tips from my field experience to improve the performance, robustness and scalability of your data workflows.

1. Minimise data movement

The main cost of a pipeline? Movement. Every time you copy, migrate or extract data, you pay in latency, in performance, and often in euros. Use tools like dbt or BigQuery to transform data where it already resides. The motto: transform inside the warehouse, not outside it.

2. Adopt modern orchestration

Airflow used to be the standard. But tools like Dagster or Prefect now bring more clarity, typing, and native monitoring. They enable better dependency management, better testing, and cleaner deployment. A good orchestrator means 50% fewer bugs.

3. Version everything, even your transformations

Pipelines are code. And any unversioned code is technical debt. Use Git to version your SQL scripts, your dbt configurations, and your Airflow DAGs. This allows for quick rollback and better collaboration.

4. Implement systematic data tests

A pipeline can fail silently… if your data is bad. Add quality tests with dbt (e.g. non-null tests, cross-reference tests, value range tests). A bug caught upstream is a dashboard that does not crash downstream.

5. Continuously monitor your cloud costs

Cloud pipelines can quickly become a money pit. Turn on cost tracking, tag your resources, and set up budget alerts. Tools like Finout or native AWS/GCP dashboards can save you from a lot of surprises.

In summary:

Optimising a pipeline is like maintaining a machine: fewer breakdowns, more value. By applying these 5 principles, you will make your data flows more reliable, more agile and more profitable.

In the world of data, building a pipeline is one thing.
